Pandit Birju Maharaj passes away

Brij Mohan Nath Mishra, popularly known as Pandit Birju Maharaj, was an exponent of the Lucknow Kalka-Bindadin gharana of Kathak dance in India. Now according to the latest report, Pandit Birju Maharaj passed away on Sunday. He was one of  the India’s best known and most loved artists. He is survived by five children, three daughters and two sons, and five grandchildren.

Pandit Birju Maharaj, had been suffering from a kidney ailment and was under dialysis treatment for the last month due to high diabetes. His grand daughter said that he probably died of a cardiac arrest. Condolences poured in as news of the death of the Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj,, who would have been 84 on 4th February, came in.

Birju Maharaj is well known for his excellent choreography for a song in Kamal Haasan starrer Vishwaroopam. He also choreographed Madhuri Dixit, twice.

India’ Prime Minister Narendra Modi said his death of Birju Maharaj is an “irreparable loss” to the entire art world.
